8 - 9 July

Mackay to Scawfell Island

Today starts like yesterday: grey, cool and a little windy.  However I can't conclude that either tomorrow will be any better than today or that today will actually be unsafe or even particularly uncomfortable.  So, I resolve to leave today as planned.

Scawfell Island is about 46 miles to the north east of Mackay, and the normal next stop in a cruise north.  To be sure, the grey skies prevented it from being a picture perfect first day out, but the wind never exceeded 17 knots from the south east and I was able to set the boat up to motor sail with a fairly easy motion.  There were only two other boats in Scawfell's large anchorage when we arrived just before sunset so we had a pretty quiet time of it.  By mid morning the following day we had the island to ourselves.

We spent a further full day at anchor, the bulk of which was ashore.  This proved to be a beautiful bay.  What more can I say.

Found on the beach, with possibly its original inhabitant still inside

A good place to sit and admire the view
