1 August

We're experiencing a return of less than perfect weather, although it's taking the form of overcast skies and intermittent increase in wind speeds rather than outright storms and rain.  We went ashore soon after 7 this morning, before breakfast, to make an assault on Whitsunday Peak.  Published sources seem to vary when giving its height, but the navigation charts list it at 430 meters so I think I'll go with that.  It's certainly the highest point in the Whitsundays.  David and I walked the track two weeks ago, and Celeste is enthusiastic about getting to the top.  This time I took the drone with me to capture some of the experience of being up there.  That made for a bit of extra weight to be lugged up, in addition to my camera and water bottles, but it was worth the effort.

A big advantage of starting out early is having the whole track and peak to ourselves.  While there was significant cloud cover, the views are still clearly wonderful.  The video, especially, shows the grandeur of the location.  Even the clouds themselves add to the scene, as their shadows play different shades of blue over the waters of the Passage.

Northwards, with Cid Harbour below us and Hook Island in the distance

A few drops of rain (that weren't actually followed up with anything more serious) got us moving back down the trail rather quickly, certainly far more quickly than I'd done the previous time.  Once back on board the boat we had breakfast and then made a quick trip back to Hamilton Island for garbage disposal, fresh water top up and some extra fresh food.  In our three hour visit we didn't even get over to the resort side of the island.  It was then back to Cid Harbour for another night.

Tomorrow we'll leave the Whitsundays.
